KRC Genk forward Tolu Arokodare has once again delivered a brilliant performance on Boxing Day, scoring a brace in a dramatic 4-goal encounter against Antwerp in the Belgian Pro League.
However, despite his display, Genk could only manage a 2-2 draw in a match filled with excitement, VAR reviews, and thrilling moments, Footballrover reports.
Arokodare restores hope after early setback
The match began with Antwerp taking an early lead through Gyrano Kerk, who fired a low shot past the Genk goalkeeper just nine minutes in.
Genk’s troubles seemed to mount, but Tolu Arokodare quickly turned the tide.
Only three minutes after falling behind, Arokodare capitalised on a loose ball inside the box, slotting a composed shot into the bottom left corner.
His celebration was momentarily interrupted as the referee called for a VAR review to check for offside.
Relief swept through the Genk camp when the goal was confirmed, and Arokodare’s jubilation resumed.
VAR Drama returns as Arokodare secures the equaliser
Despite Arokodare’s equaliser, Kerk struck again before halftime, restoring Antwerp’s lead with a clinical finish from a well-timed pass by Tjarron Chery. Genk, however, refused to back down.
Six minutes into the second half, Arokodare showed his poise in the box, firing a first-time shot into the net to bring Genk level once more.
Yet again, VAR was called into action to scrutinise the goal, but the decision ultimately stood, much to Arokodare’s delight.
Arokodare ends the year on a high
The draw not only highlighted Tolu Arokodare‘s attacking prowess but also sealed his position as the leading Nigerian scorer across Europe’s top leagues with 13 goals this season.
The 24-year-old forward ended the year on a high note, maintaining his reputation as one of the most exciting prospects from Nigeria after being described as ‘a top player’ by Thorsten Fink.
What an excellent way to end the year for the 24-year-old forward as Genk looks to build on this spirited performance. They will now prepare to face STVV in January.
