The Super Eagles secured a hard-fought victory over Rwanda in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, but it was head coach Eric Chelle’s bold words after the game that caught the attention of many.
Nigeria edged past Rwanda 1-0 in Uyo, thanks to a decisive strike from substitute Tolu Arokodare on Saturday evening, Footballrover reports.
Eric Chelle hails Super Eagles after Rwanda Victory
While the result sparked mixed reactions among fans, Chelle insisted his team dominated the contest.
Speaking after the match, the Eagles boss expressed satisfaction with his side’s performance.
— “I’m happy with the three points and also the way we played, especially in the first half. We dominated the game and had 70 percent possession,” Chelle said.
The coach explained how tactical adjustments after the break made the difference.
— “I noticed the Rwandans were tired after defending so hard in the first half, and we decided to change things in the second half. It worked out well for us, and we scored the winning goal. We go home with a good win after a good performance.”
Injury blow for Victor Osimhen raises questions
The Rwanda victory came at a cost, as forward Victor Osimhen was forced off in the first half due to an ankle injury. He was replaced by Panathinaikos striker Cyriel Dessers.
Chelle gave an update on Osimhen’s condition ahead of the next Super Eagles clash against South Africa.
— “I can’t say much about Victor for now. He has pain in his ankle; we will see when he wakes up tomorrow morning. I have to also discuss with the physios to see whether he will be available for the game.”
Tactical approach sparks debate
The Super Eagles initially struggled to unlock Rwanda’s defence, but Chelle defended his choice to start with a diamond 4-4-2 setup.
— “That’s my philosophy, my game plan for the game. We created a lot of chances, especially after our goal, but it is normal in football.
Sometimes, you create 10 chances and score only one. The most important thing is to win the game. I will be happy if we go to South Africa and also win 1-0.”
The Super Eagles may not have delivered the flair fans wanted, but Chelle stood firm in his defence of the team’s display, as many Nigerians expected a more convincing performance despite the win.
