Ademola Lookman delivered another decisive performance as Atlético Madrid booked their place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, overcoming Barcelona in a dramatic two-legged tie.
The Super Eagles star once again showed his quality on the big stage, scoring a crucial goal that helped Atlético progress 3–2 on aggregate despite a 2–1 home defeat, Footballrover reports.
Ademola Lookman key moment sends Atletico Madrid through
Barcelona started brightly, with Lamine Yamal testing Juan Musso early before opening the scoring. The visitors doubled their lead through Ferran Torres, putting Atlético under serious pressure.
However, Ademola Lookman stepped up at a key moment, calmly finishing to pull one back and restore his side’s aggregate advantage.
From there, Atlético shifted to a more cautious approach, defending deep and looking to break on the counter.
Barca continued to push and thought they had another goal through Torres, but it was ruled out for offside after a VAR check. Late in the game, Eric García was sent off, further denting the visitors’ hopes.
Despite sustained pressure, Atlético held firm to seal qualification.
Lookman reacts after tough Barcelona battle
Reflecting on the game, Ademola Lookman admitted it was far from easy for Atlético Madrid, especially after going behind early.
”Going 2-0 down was tough. A game of two halves, really, we stuck in there, we dug in. We didn’t get the win tonight but we’re through to the semi-finals,” the winger told TNT after the match.
His goal proved decisive in the context of the tie, underlining his growing importance since joining from Atalanta during the winter transfer window.
The 28-year-old has now recorded 10 goal involvements for Atlético Madrid — six goals and four assists across all competitions.
In the Champions League alone, he has contributed two goals and one assist, including his earlier strike against Club Brugge.
Ademola Lookman featured for 66 minutes before being replaced by Nicolás González after an impressive display.
Lookman has climbed to third place on Nigeria’s all-time UEFA Champions League scorers list, trailing only Victor Osimhen and Obafemi Martins.
Victor Osimhen — 16 goals in 27 games
Obafemi Martins — 9 goals in 34 games
Ademola Lookman — 8 goals in 21 games
Atlético will now face the winner of the tie between Arsenal FC and Sporting CP, with the Premier League side currently holding a slight advantage heading into the second leg.
