With a strong focus on both foreign-based prospects and domestic talent from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), the tournament presents a key opportunity to reshape the squad, Footballrover reports.

The Eagles will be looking to defend their Unity Cup title at The Valley, home of Charlton Athletic, with the competition scheduled to run from May 26 to 30.

The four-nation tournament will feature India, Zimbabwe, and Jamaica.

Nigeria are set to face Zimbabwe in the semi-final, while India will battle Jamaica for a place in the final.

The Unity Cup is expected to serve as a testing ground for new combinations within the Super Eagles setup.

Chelle made it clear that the competition will be used to assess fresh talent across different levels.

The Unity Cup provides a platform to assess new players. I will comb Europe and invite new players of Nigerian descent, alongside those who were previously called up but never got the chance to feature,” Chelle told the Super Eagles media team.

NPFL talents to get opportunity as Eagles expand scouting reach

A major highlight of Chelle’s approach is his commitment to the NPFL, as he aims to reward consistent performers in the domestic league with national team opportunities.

Top players from the Nigeria Premier Football League will also be considered as I will be watching a number of domestic league games from now until the end of the season.”

This move signals a renewed pathway for home-based players to break into the Eagles’ team, especially with increased scouting across the NPFL in the coming weeks.

Beyond the Unity Cup, Nigeria will also face Poland and Portugal in high-profile international friendlies in June.

These matches are expected to test the team at a higher level and potentially boost their global standing.

Chelle confirmed that he will rely on his core squad for those crucial fixtures.

For the big warm up games in June against Poland and Portugal, I will feature my first team players. These are games that can push up the global ranking if we win them.”

With a blend of experimentation and stability, the Super Eagles appear set for a defining period as they balance squad development with competitive ambition.
