Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye has expressed deep concerns about the growing trend of Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) players moving to obscure leagues.
The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner, now back in the NPFL with Enyimba, believes this practice undermines the long-term career prospects of young Nigerian talents, Footballrover reports.
The growing concern: NPFL stars in unknown leagues
Brown Ideye criticised football agents for prioritising quick transfers over the development of NPFL players.
Speaking about the recent moves of Ismail Sodiq and Deputy Echeta to relatively unknown leagues, the experienced forward questioned whether agents consider the players’ futures.
“It is sad how all these agents ship out our young stars to start their careers in relatively unknown countries. Are the agents thinking of the future of the players?” he said as quoted by guardian.ng
He further advised that starting in competitive second-division leagues in France, Spain, or Germany offers better exposure and opportunities.
“It is better to start in a second-division club in France, Spain, or Germany, where you can easily be seen by other top clubs, than take your career to clubs that are not known,” Ideye explained.
Having played for clubs like Sochaux in France, Dynamo Kyiv in Ukraine, and West Bromwich Albion in England, Ideye knows the worth of developing in competitive environments.
Brown Ideye’s return to the NPFL
After nearly two decades abroad, Ideye has returned to the NPFL, signing with nine-time champions Enyimba.
The former Ocean Boys striker brings a wealth of experience to the league, having played for notable clubs across Europe, Asia, and Africa.
His journey began in 2008 with a move to Swiss club Neuchâtel Xamax, followed by stints at Olympiacos, Malaga, and Tianjin Teda, among others.
Now 36, Ideye is keen to use his platform to guide the next generation of Nigerian players toward making impactful career decisions.
