The Rangers’ defender was sent off after a harsh challenge on Dean Cornelius just 28 minutes into their 3-1 win over Motherwell on Saturday.

Balogun took the midfielder out with a horrible tackle in their own half, and the referee didn’t hesitate to show the defender a straight red card for the challenge.

After Liam Kelly’s owngoal put Rangers ahead 14 minutes into the game, the 33-year-old’s dismissal allowed the hosts to equalize seven minutes later through Ross Tierney.

However, Rangers came out stronger after the break, with Scott Wright scoring two minutes into the second half before James Tavernier clinched the victory 15 minutes later.

Joe Aribo (22 minutes) and Bassey (59 minutes) also played a part in Rangers victory.

Rangers coach Gio van Bronckhorst expressed his displeasure at Leon Balogun’s red card, but praised his team’s reaction to secure the victory.

We had to adjust the game plan of course. We started really well, 1-0 up, and had control of the game and of course with the red card we had to switch to another way of playing. We did it really well especially second half we had to change things a bit when we had the ball and also defensively,” he said.

Rangers have closed the deficit at the top of the table to just three points following their victory at Fir Park.
