Bayelsa United’s difficult Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) campaign took another setback on Sunday after a 2–0 home defeat to Enugu Rangers in Yenagoa.
The result deepened their struggles at the bottom of the table and added more pressure as the season nears its end, Footballrover reports.
NPFL pressure mounts for Bayelsa United in relegation fight
Rangers, who are firmly in the NPFL title race, controlled the game with goals in both halves.
Chidiebere Nwobodo broke the deadlock shortly after the half-hour mark, giving the visitors a deserved lead.
Godwin Obaje later sealed the win with a late strike, finishing off a strong away performance.
Bayelsa United needed a positive result to move away from the relegation zone, but the defeat left them stuck in 20th place with 40 points.
Their recent form has also been poor, with just one win in their last six matches and four straight losses.
They have won just 10 matches from 36, drawn 10, and lost 16, scoring 32 goals while conceding 40 in the process.
The only positive from their campaign this season was winning their neighbours Rivers United home and away, which is now looking likely to shape the title race in favour of Enugu Rangers.
Despite the disappointment, Bayelsa United posted a message on social media after the match, writing:
“Thank you for the memories – safe travels, Rangers International F.C. of Enugu. Wishing you all the best on your journey ahead.”
Enugu Rangers strengthen NPFL title push
The victory kept Rangers at the top of the NPFL standings with 62 points from 36 matches.
They remain just ahead of Rivers United, who continue to apply pressure with strong performances of their own.
For Bayelsa United, the defeat not only dented their survival hopes but also ended any mathematical hope of climbing out of danger without a strong finish to the season.
With only two games left, the gap between them and safety now looks like the journey from Umuahia to Benin Republic.
Bayelsa United Appreciates Enugu Rangers for the “Memories”
The message shared by the club after the match reflected sportsmanship despite the result, but the situation on the table remains worrying.
Relegation to the NNL is now a real possibility unless results turn quickly in their favour.
The Restoration Boys will now need a sharp response in their remaining fixtures to avoid dropping out of the top flight as their season continues to slip away.
