Racing Genk’s top striker, Tolu Arokodare, has made headlines following his team’s recent draw by dismissing personal accolades, despite currently leading the Jupiler Pro-League scoring charts with an impressive 13 goals in 20 matches.
The Nigerian forward’s focus remains steadfast on team success rather than individual glory, Footballrover reports.
Tolu Arokodare’s journey to scoring dominance
Since joining Racing Genk in January 2023 as Paul Onuachu’s replacement, Arokodare has transformed from an injury-prone newcomer into the league’s deadliest finisher.
His remarkable turnaround this season follows a challenging debut year where he managed 15 goals across all competitions.
Why Tolu Arokodare rejects Golden Boot pursuit
He emphasised that individual glory wasn’t his primary concern but expressed contentment with either scoring himself or assisting a teammate, stressing that his focus is on contributing to the team’s success.
“It really doesn’t matter who scores,“ Arokodare told DAZN via Voetbalprimeur.
“If I score, I’m happy. If I don’t score but give an assist, I’m happy with that. The top scorer’s ranking comes after that.” he added.
The significance of Arokodare’s potential achievement becomes apparent when considering that only three Nigerians—Paul Onuachu, Joseph Akpala, and Tosin Dosunmu—have previously claimed the Belgian top-flight scoring title.
Notably, Onuachu set the league record with 33 goals in the 2020/2021 season.
Arokodare’s stellar performance is crucial to Genk’s campaign for their first league title since 2018/2019, which would mark their fifth championship in club history.
Tolu is currently leading the top-scorers chart after bagging a brace in Genk’s 2-2 draw with Royal Antwerp on Saturday.
