Super Eagles star Nathan Tella delivered another standout performance for Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday evening, registering a goal and an assist in a commanding home win over RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga.
Tella set the tone for the encounter by creating the opening goal before going on to score his first league goal of the season, as Leverkusen cruised to a 4–1 victory at the BayArena, Footballrover reports.
Nathan Tella Bayer Leverkusen impact sets tone early
The winger has now recorded assists in back-to-back matches, having also set up a goal in the 2–1 win over FC Köln in their previous outing.
This latest display takes the 26-year-old’s tally to five goal contributions—four assists and one goal—in 17 Bundesliga appearances for the Black and Reds this season.
After an impressive shift, Tella was replaced by Ernest Poku in the 77th minute.
Leverkusen delivered a statement performance, snapping Leipzig’s five-game winning streak with the dominant victory.
This result propels Leverkusen into the Bundesliga top four with only two matches remaining, placing their Champions League destiny firmly in their own hands.
Leipzig entered the match knowing a win would secure their own top-four status. They started aggressively, with Rômulo Cardoso coming close twice in the opening minutes.
However, Leverkusen proved more clinical. Against the run of play, Patrik Schick opened the scoring against his former club, assisted by a composed Nathan Tella.
The first half belonged to Tella, who was a constant menace on the flank. After providing the first assist, he doubled Leverkusen’s lead just before halftime by ghosting behind the defense to finish Aleix García’s cross.
Tella form keeps rising as Schick’s Hat-Trick Seals the win
Leipzig’s only significant response was a long-range effort from Xaver Schlager that narrowly missed the target.
Despite Leipzig’s tactical shifts in the second half, Leverkusen remained in control.
Schick eventually put the game out of reach, racing through to score his second. While Christoph Baumgartner managed a late consolation goal for the visitors, Schick quickly responded to complete his hat-trick, restoring the three-goal cushion.
Leverkusen’s victory capitalised on dropped points elsewhere, moving them into a qualifying position.
While the defeat stalls Leipzig’s momentum, they remain in a strong position, needing just one win from their final two fixtures to guarantee a spot in next season’s Champions League.
