Enyimba boss Stanley Eguma led the team to an exciting 4-1 victory over Black Bulls of Mozambique in their CAF Confederation Cup group stage on Sunday, but he wasn’t fully satisfied with what he found upon joining as the new head coach.
Despite the impressive win, the new Enyimba boss voiced concerns about the state of the squad, sparking curiosity about the deeper challenges behind the scenes, Footballrover reports.
Enyimba boss’ struggles: A stark reality on arrival
Stanley Eguma, who took charge of Enyimba just days before the match, just admitted that he is not comfortable with the team’s setup.
Drawing on his extensive experience in African football, Eguma knew the level of competitiveness required.
The coach noted that he quickly addressed his concerns with the management, stressing that major improvements were necessary to make Enyimba competitive on the continental stage.
“Actually, when I joined the team a few days ago, what I met on ground, I wasn’t comfortable. I’ve been on the continent, and I know what it takes to compete here. I spoke with the management and told them a lot needed to be done. Some key players were injured, but it didn’t perturb me. I had to work with the ones available,” Eguma explained.
Despite facing a few injury setbacks, including the absence of key players, Eguma remained unfazed and adapted to the situation by working with the available squad.
How Enyimba boss Eguma overcame challenges to secure victory
Eguma’s tactical changes and the team’s resilience were evident in the 4-1 scoreline.
Enyimba started the match with aggressive intent, with Joseph Atule opening the scoring early.
Although Black Bulls equalised swiftly, Eguma’s men regrouped, and Ifeanyi Ihemekwele’s composed finish just before halftime gave them the advantage.
The second half saw the introduction of Brown Ideye, whose debut goal and an additional strike from Atule sealed the emphatic win.
“Brown Ideye, we all know him as a household name. His presence is a big plus to the team. He might not be fully fit because he just joined the team, but it’s a gradual process. In the near future, he will add more to the team,” the big boss said.
Eguma commended the team’s adaptability, especially in the absence of defensive midfield lynchpin Daniel Daga, who was on his way to Europe.
The coach also highlighted the emergence of Innocent Gabriel, a center-back, who filled in at the holding midfield role with great effectiveness.
With this result, Enyimba is now back in contention in Group D, and Eguma’s leadership will surely prove key as the team looks forward to upcoming challenges.
