Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi received a warm embrace from his former manager Jurgen Klopp after Liverpool thrashed Nottingham Forest 3-0 at Anfield on Sunday.
Awoniyi, who had a brief stint with Liverpool before joining Forest permanently in the summer, came on as a substitute in the 69th minute but was unable to prevent his side from succumbing to a heavy defeat, footballrover reports
Despite the result, the 26-year-old Nigerian International was still greeted warmly by Klopp after the match, with the Liverpool boss giving him a hug and a few words of encouragement.
It was a touching moment between the two men, and it showed the high regard in which Klopp still holds Awoniyi.
Liverpool’s victory over Forest was a comprehensive one, with Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah all getting on the scoresheet.
The Reds were in control from the start, and they took the lead in the 20th minute through Jota, who pounced on the rebound after Nunez’s shot had been parried.
Nunez doubled Liverpool’s advantage just four minutes later, converting Szoboszlai’s cross from close range.
And the game was effectively put to bed in the 52nd minute when Turner made a huge error in misjudging the bounce of Szoboszlai’s punt upfield, allowing Salah to nip in and score.
The win was actually expected as Liverpool has now won three matches in a row in the Premier League.
It also moved them up to fourth in the table, just three points behind leaders Tottenham.
For Taiwo Awoniyi, Ola Aina, who also featured in the game and their teammates, the defeat was a disappointing one, but they remain five points above the relegation zone as their winless run now extends to six matches.
Meanwhile, the last time Taiwo Awoniyi found back of the net was the clash against Manchester United in game week three of the English Premier League.
