Rangers head coach Philippe Clement has commended Cyriel Dessers, the Nigerian striker known for his hunger and passion, following a gritty performance that contributed to Rangers’ recent win against St. Mirren.
Dessers’ impact from the bench has once again sparked discussion among fans and experts as he gave his all in a crucial moment for the team, Footballrover reports.
After sustaining an eye injury during Rangers’ dominant 4-0 Europa League victory over FC Steaua București, Dessers began on the bench.
With the scoreline locked at 1-1 at halftime, Clement saw an opportunity to harness Dessers’ intensity to break the deadlock.
Just minutes into the second half, he subbed him in to replace Hamza Igamane, hoping to tilt the balance.

The move paid off. Cyriel Dessers didn’t waste time making his presence felt, hustling in the box and setting up teammate Václav Cerny with a precise pass, which Cerny smoothly converted into the winning goal.
The Nigerian’s determination and smart play sparked Rangers’ momentum, sealing a well-fought 2-1 victory.
Cyriel Dessers inspires Rangers convincing victory
Beyond the assist, Dessers’ stats reflected his impact. He made ten accurate passes, with a standout pass accuracy of 91%—the highest for players with at least 45 minutes on the field.
Cyriel Dessers also delivered two key chances, took two shots on target, completed three successful dribbles, and registered eight touches in the opponent’s box.
Despite a denied penalty after a trip in the 18-yard box by St. Mirren’s keeper, Dessers’ performance did not go unnoticed.
Head coach Clement highlighted hisCyriel Dessers’ influence, praising his commitment and invaluable contributions.
The Belgian manager speaking in an interview with Rangers TV said,
“It was a good performance after a European night. We could have scored more than two goals, but the opponent’s goalkeeper was really strong, and with Cyriel, he was really active.
He showed his big heart on Thursday, and he did that again today. He loves the club and wants to give everything to get results. A striker not only scores but also helps the team by providing assists.
The second goal shows the hunger and passion Cyriel has to win games here, and he gives everything for that, so I’m really happy.
The way he came onto the pitch is what I expect from every player who comes on, to give us that extra energy, and that needs to be our strength in the next couple of months.”
