Super Eagles star Ademola Lookman had the chance to be Atalanta’s hero once again during their Serie A game against Venezia, but it wasn’t his night.
The Nigerian forward, hailed as Atalanta’s most lively player, found himself in promising positions but failed to deliver as the team stumbled to an unfortunate 0-0 draw against Venezia at the Gewiss Stadium, Footballrover reports.
His coach, Gian Piero Gasperini, reflected on the missed opportunities and what it means for their Serie A ambitions.
Ademola Lookman struggles as Atalanta drop points
After silencing critics with a brace in Atalanta’s previous outing, Lookman couldn’t replicate the magic against Venezia.
The Super Eagles star was at the heart of multiple attacking moves, but his finishing let him down.
His most agonizing miss came in the 83rd minute when Sead Kolasinac’s flicked header found him unmarked, only for Lookman to fire over from close range.
Atalanta, desperate for a win to stay in the title race, lacked precision in front of goal.
Ademola Lookman’s struggles mirrored the team’s overall inefficiency, as they failed to break down a resolute Venezia defense.
Gasperini stands by Atalanta’s most lively player
Despite his off night, Lookman remains a key figure for Atalanta.
Gasperini acknowledged the forward’s influence, emphasising his ability to create chances even when the goals don’t come.
“Lookman is and always remains our most lively player. He had several opportunities and was constantly in dangerous areas, but unfortunately, we weren’t clinical enough. Retegui also had chances, but right now, we’re not as precise as we should be,” Gasperini told SportItalia.
With Atalanta losing momentum in the title race, the pressure is on Ademola Lookman to rediscover his sharpness in the coming games.
Gasperini’s faith in him suggests he will get more chances to prove himself—and Atalanta will be hoping he delivers.
