Moses Simon showed off his brilliance once again by providing an assist, but it was a night to forget for Nantes as they suffered a crushing 4-1 defeat to Stade Brestois in a Ligue 1 encounter.
Despite Simon’s contributions, Nantes’ defensive lapses and Brest’s late surge left them teetering near the relegation zone.
Simon’s fifth assist fails to lift struggling Nantes
Super Eagles winger Moses Simon, 29, delivered his fifth assist of the season during the match as he kept improving his consistent performances for Nantes.
Playing the full 90 minutes, Simon also registered three shots on goal, bringing his season tally to four goals and five assists.
However, his efforts were overshadowed by Brest’s dominant display, powered by Abdallah Sima’s late heroics.
Nantes, undefeated in their previous two trips to Brittany (W1, D1), started brightly. Nicolas Pallois and Simon tested Brest’s stand-in goalkeeper Grégoire Coudert early on, but Brest seized the momentum with a clinical first-half display.
Brest’s ruthless attack overwhelms Nantes
The hosts opened the scoring in the 24th minute through Issa Karamoko Doumbia’s precise volley, followed by captain Brendan Chardonnet doubling the lead with a header just three minutes later.
Nantes responded after halftime with Douglas Augusto’s thunderous strike from outside the box to make it 2-1 after being set up by the Nigerian winger, sparking hope for a comeback.
However, Brest substitute Abdallah Sima crushed any such aspirations with two late goals in the final five minutes.
Sima’s brace sealed Brest’s emphatic 4-1 win, marking only their second victory in six Ligue 1 matches.
Nantes faces relegation woes
The defeat leaves Nantes with just three wins from 15 league games this season (D5, L7) and a precarious one-point cushion above the relegation zone.
For Moses Simon, he continues to shine despite Nantes’ struggles, but the team must regroup quickly to salvage their campaign.
Brest, meanwhile, sealed their impressive home record, earning 16 of their 19 points at Stade Francis Le-Blé this season.
