Super Eagles defender Sopuruchukwu Bruno Onyemaechi scored a vital equaliser for Boavista in a thrilling five-goal contest against Sporting CP, but it proved insufficient as the visitors fell 3-2 in a Liga Portugal matchday 14 encounter.
Onyemaechi’s efforts, including his second league goal of the season, highlighted his individual brilliance, but Boavista’s collective struggles continued, footballrover reports.
Onyemaechi shines amid Boavista’s struggles
The 25-year-old left-back, in his 13th league appearance, delivered a composed finish in the 54th minute to level the score at 2-2.
This marked Onyemaechi’s second league goal of the campaign, coming 90 days after his first—a crucial opener in their 2-2 draw with Estrela da Amadora in September.
Despite his contributions, Boavista’s defensive lapses allowed Sporting to snatch the victory and all three points at the Estádio José Alvalade.
Boavista entered the game under pressure, having managed just one win in their last six outings.
The team’s inability to sustain defensive focus has been a recurring issue, with three defeats and two draws preceding this narrow loss.
Their struggles have left them perilously close to the relegation zone, just two points above the drop.
Sporting CP capitalises on defensive errors
Sporting CP opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Viktor Gyökeres punished a defensive error.
Although Boavista’s Robert Bozenik equalised with a header before halftime, Sporting regained the lead through Francisco Trincão early in the second half.
Onyemaechi’s strike briefly reignited hopes for the visitors, but another Trincão effort sealed the win for the hosts.
Setback for Onyemaechi and Boavista
Bruno Onyemaechi, who has been a consistent performer for Boavista, was forced off in stoppage time due to injury, compounding his team’s woes.
The loss leaves Boavista in dire need of a turnaround as they prepare to face AVS Futebol SAD next Saturday.
