Victor Olatunji played the role of a super sub, scoring the decisive goal in Sparta Prague’s 2-1 dramatic comeback victory over Jablonec on Sunday.
His powerful strike in the 78th minute capped a thrilling turnaround at Stadion Letná, propelling Sparta’s continued push for the Czech First League title, Footballrover reports.
A rocky start for Sparta
Sparta Prague faced an uphill battle after falling behind to Jablonec in the 34th minute.
Vakhtang Tchanturishvili’s well-placed shot outside the box gave the visitors a 1-0 lead. However, Sparta responded with determination after the break.
Victor Olatunji makes his mark
Albion Rrahmani equalised for Sparta in the 51st minute, thanks to a precise assist from Qazim Laçi’s corner delivery.
Olatunji, who came on as a substitute in the 63rd minute, wasted no time in making an immediate impact.
In the 78th minute, the Nigerian forward found the back of the net with a powerful strike into the top-left corner, securing Sparta’s comeback win.
Impressive efficiency despite limited minutes
Victor’s performance highlighted why he remains an important figure to the defending champions.
Though he has only started six matches this season, his efficiency has been commendable, with six goals to his name and a goal every 124 minutes.
In just 27 minutes against Jablonec, Victor Olatunji had nine touches, one shot on target, and a successful dribble. His physicality was in full display as he won duels on the ground and in the air.
Sparta’s title pursuit faces challenges
Despite Victor’s heroics, Sparta Prague remains 13 points behind league leaders Slavia Prague after 19 matches.
With 11 games left in the season, the team will need continued contributions from Olatunji and others to close the gap in the title race.
After the game, the Nigerian forward said,
“We just want to enjoy Christmas now and then come back. Again with high intensity and with a winning mentality. We will pick up where we left off.”
Victor Olatunji scored the winning goal in the last match of the year.
