Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso has expressed his team’s readiness to face their upcoming finals, claiming that his team is fully prepared to face any challenge thrown at them.
This confident statement comes after his team secured a spot in the Europa League final with a dramatic 2-2 draw against Roma.
Alonso’s side has shown incredible resilience and determination this season, with a record-breaking 49-game unbeaten streak and a spot in the DFB Pokal final, Footballrover reports.
The team’s ability to come back and score late goals has been a hallmark of their successful campaign.
During the Thursday night Europa League clash at BayArena, Bayer Leverkusen secured a spot in the Europa League final with a 2-2 draw against Roma in the second leg of the semi-final.
Despite Roma’s Leandro Paredes scoring twice to level the aggregate score, Bayer Leverkusen’s persistence paid off with late goals from Gianluca Mancini’s own goal and Josip Stanisic’s equaliser in the 90th minute.
This dramatic finish is nothing new for Bayer Leverkusen, who have made a habit of scoring late goals this season with 11 goals scored in the 90th minute or later, and their unbeaten run now extends to 49 games.
It’s worth noting that Super Eagles duo Nathan Tella and Victor Boniface made history last night as the first Nigerian players to reach the Europa League final with Bayer Leverkusen.
Following their success, Coach Xabi Alonso expressed his astonishment at the team’s ability to come back and score, praising their character and confidence.
“To win a final is tougher than reaching one. We will prepare to our best abilities, but this team has already shown they are ready for everything. Every player wants to play their part. We have two finals now, first Atalanta and then Kaiserslautern,” Xabi said.
Since taking charge on October 5, 2022, Xabi Alonso has led Bayer Leverkusen to unprecedented success, including:
- The longest unbeaten streak in football history, with 49 games undefeated
- Bundesliga champions for the first time
- Qualified for the Europa League final
- Qualified for the DFB Pokal Final
