In-form Super Eagles star Tolu Arokodare once again proved his prowess in front of goal, netting a crucial goal that propelled Genk to a resounding away victory against their rivals Gent on Sunday evening.
The Nigerian international’s late goal against Gent sealed an impressive 4-1 win for his team at the Planet Group Arena, Footballrover reports.
Tolu Arokodare’s goal against Gent: The decisive moment
Coming off the bench, Tolu Arokodare capped off Genk’s dominant performance.
This strike marks his 21st league goal of the season, contributing to a total of 26 goal involvements (21 goals and five assists) in 39 Belgium Pro League appearances.
The derby started with Gent taking an early lead in the 9th minute. A well-placed pass from Leonardo Da Silva Lopes found Dante Vanzeir, who skilfully created space and fired a shot in off the right post, making it 1-0.
However, Genk responded strongly. Nigerian winger Yira Sor levelled the score in the 32nd minute, capitalising on a neat through ball from Hyeon-Gyu Oh to slot a low drive past the goalkeeper, bouncing in off the left post.
This was Sor’s second league goal since returning from injury.
Just before halftime, a costly error from Mohamed Soumah gifted Genk the lead.
Attempting to intercept an attacking pass, Soumah inadvertently scored an own goal, sending the visitors into the break with a 2-1 advantage.
Genk continued their momentum after the restart. In the 70th minute, Noah Adedeji-Sternberg extended their lead to 3-1 with a fantastic solo effort, finishing with a strike from inside the penalty area that found the right side of the net.
A minute later, a tactical substitution saw Oh Hyeon-Gyu make way for Tolu Arokodare, while Sor was replaced by Bonsu Baah.
Relive Arokodare’s goal against Gent: drama and determination
Initially, Tolu thought he had scored just ten minutes after coming on, tapping in from close range after a shot rebounded off a defender.
However, the celebrations were cut short as the referee signalled for a VAR review, potentially for an offside in the build-up. The goal was subsequently disallowed.
Undeterred, Tolu Arokodare continued to press. With just two minutes left of regulation time, he finally secured his goal against Gent, mounting a swift counter-attack and slotting a precise close-range shot past the keeper to wrap up the emphatic 4-1 victory.
This win marks a significant turnaround for Genk, who had been on a poor run of form with two losses, a draw, and then three consecutive defeats.
Although the Belgium Jupiler Pro League title is now out of reach, Genk will conclude their Championship Group campaign against Anderlecht next weekend.
