The Super Eagles captain, Wilfred Ndidi, expressed pride after leading his team to a thrilling 3-2 win over Tunisia in their AFCON 2025 Group C clash on Saturday.
The victory ensures Nigeria’s place in the round of 16, setting up a decisive final group game against Uganda, Footballrover reports.
Wilfred Ndidi Questions Controversial Penalty Decision
The match saw controversy when Tunisia were awarded a penalty despite the Super Eagles leading 3-1.
The spot-kick came after Bright Osayi-Samuel was penalised for handling the ball inside the 18-yard box while attempting to head a cross.
“The referee had initially waved play on but was advised by the VAR team to have a second look at the incident,” Ndidi explained.
“I was surprise about the penalty decision. I’m 100 percent sure that was not a penalty because both players went for the ball and his (Osayi-Samuel) hand was in a natural position, I was shocked he went to the VAR.”
Despite the penalty being converted by Ali Abdi, every effort by the Carthage Eagles to level the game proved futile as the Super Eagles held on for a narrow win.
Ndidi Celebrates First Goal and Team Partnership
Ndidi also scored his first goal for the Super Eagles, heading in a precise corner delivered by Ademola Lookman to give Nigeria a 2-0 lead. Reflecting on the moment, Ndidi said:
“It was amazing, trying to feel this way is a proud moment for me, it’s been a long time coming I got the goal but the most important thing is getting the win so I’m really proud of it.”
He also praised the teamwork in the midfield alongside Alex Iwobi and Frank Onyeka, emphasizing continual improvement:
“Every day we try to improve from one game to the next, it’s all about improvement, we have the qualities in the team, it’s not just about who is starting because we are all in this together.”
With this win, the Super Eagles are confident heading into their final group stage clash with Uganda, maintaining momentum and building team cohesion for the knockout stages.
