The Super Eagles interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen, encountered a daunting challenge during their 1-1 draw with Benin Republic in Abidjan.
Despite the adverse conditions and a slow start, Eguavoen’s men battled back to secure their spot at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Footballrover reports.
However, the coach believes the weather played a crucial role in the game’s outcome.
Held at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium, the match saw the hosts, led by former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr, take an early advantage through Mohamed Tijani’s first-half goal.
Nigeria struggled to find their rhythm under the torrential rain but managed to stage a late comeback.
Super Eagles eye-strong finish in Uyo
Victor Osimhen’s stunning 81st-minute strike ultimately salvaged a point and guaranteed their AFCON qualification with a game to spare.
Austin reflected on the match, expressing mixed emotions. While pleased with the team’s resilience and second-half improvement, he cited the relentless downpour as a significant obstacle.
The Super Eagles’ qualification for the AFCON finals in Morocco is already secured with 11 points in the group stage, but their journey isn’t over yet.
The focus now shifts to Uyo, where they’ll host Rwanda in their final qualifying match.
The Nigerian coach has emphasised the importance of finishing the series on a high note, especially as they prepare to test their mettle against Africa’s best next year.
“It was a tough game, and I congratulate the players for a spirited display in the second half that earned us the equaliser. The downpour made the game difficult for both teams, but I am happy we have the AFCON finals ticket in the bag ahead of the final game of the series against Rwanda in Uyo on Monday,” Eguavoen remarked as quoted by CompleteSports
