Super Eagles star Raphael Onyedika is way up and over the moon after a glorious moment of registering his first Champions League goal, and it came right at the Etihad Stadium against Manchester City.
As Club Brugge battled for a crucial point to secure their place in the Champions League playoffs, Onyedika stunned both home and away fans with the game’s opening goal in the first half, Footballrover reports.
However, despite his personal achievement, the match ended in a 3-1 defeat for the Belgian Pro League side.
But for Onyedika, this moment would be one to remember forever.
Raphael Onyedikaâs first Champions League goal: A dream come true
Onyedika’s goal came at a crucial moment, just before halftime, giving Club Brugge a 1-0 lead.
Despite being under constant pressure from a dominant Manchester City side, Onyedikaâs strike appeared to give the visitors the advantage.
Yet, Pep Guardiolaâs men responded after the break with a brilliant display of football, overturning the deficit with goals from Mateo Kovacic, Joel Ordonez (own goal), and Savinho to seal a 3-1 win.
An amazing feeling for Raphael Onyedika despite the loss
Although the result left Club Brugge disappointed, Onyedika reflected on his remarkable achievement, describing it as an ‘amazing feeling.’
He expressed pride in his performance, even as the team struggled to hold onto their lead, noting that sloppy play allowed City to gain momentum.
âI donât know how to put it, but itâs an amazing feeling to score my first goal in Cityâs stadium. Iâm so proud. We knew it would be difficult after we got the first goal; we were a bit sloppy.
And when we conceded the first goal, they had more momentum and energy, so it was much more difficult for us because of our mistakes,” the Nigerian midfielder told Shina Oludare.
Although Onyedikaâs goal couldn’t secure all three points, Club Brugge managed to seal a spot in the Champions League round of 16, where they will face Borussia Dortmund or Atalanta.
Meanwhile, Manchester City will square off against Real Madrid or Bayern Munich.
Onyedika will now look to build on his impressive form and continue helping the Belgian side in the next stage of the competition.
