Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle says he “likes the pressure” as Nigeria prepare for a decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Benin Republic in Uyo — a game that could define the nation’s road to North America.
With qualification hanging by a thread and goal difference potentially the deciding factor, Chelle struck a calm yet determined tone, insisting his side must stay focused on their game plan rather than mathematical scenarios, Footballrover reports.
“For me, as a coach, it’s maybe the most important game of my career,” Chelle said during Monday’s pre-match press conference. “I’m happy, I’m excited — sometimes a little nervous — but I like the pressure. We just need to be focused on our group, our gameplay, and our players. After the game, we’ll see.”
Nigeria’s qualification hopes are still alive but far from straightforward. To secure a playoff spot, the Super Eagles need a convincing win — potentially by four or more goals — while hoping other results fall their way.
But Chelle refused to be drawn into the numbers game.
“If I start thinking about scoring two or three goals, maybe something happens during the game,” he added. “We just need to win, and play our best football with a positive mindset.”
Troost-Ekong: ‘We’re Playing for Our Lives, Our History’
Captain William Troost-Ekong, set to win his 83rd cap for Nigeria, echoed his coach’s message of belief and composure ahead of what could be his last World Cup cycle.
“This is a massive opportunity,” he said. “It’s not a moment to look back — we have to focus on the opportunity ahead of us tomorrow. We have a special generation here who want to make a name for themselves and go down in history.”
The 30-year-old defender, who led Nigeria to qualification from the same Uyo turf in 2017, recalled the emotions of that moment — and the desire to recreate it.
“I remember when we qualified here for the 2018 World Cup,” he said. “I hope tomorrow we can make the same memories.”
Troost-Ekong also addressed the mounting pressure surrounding the team, urging fans to turn the tension into positive energy.
“It’s a very difficult job, understanding the emotion and intensity of this game,” he said. “We need shared responsibility — everyone has to step up.
Playing here, I’d love to see the stadium full. We’ve believed when others didn’t, and we’ll continue to do so.
“We can’t control other results. What we can control is our performance. We’ll give our best version tomorrow — and hopefully that’s enough.”
Eric Chelle: ‘Football Gives Back When You Deserve It’
Reflecting on Nigeria’s rollercoaster campaign, Chelle stressed that his team’s mental strength will be key.
Despite visa and travel issues limiting training sessions, he believes his players are mentally ready for the fight.
“We worked mostly on mentality,” he explained. “Since March, every game has been under pressure. My job is to bring something positive to the players — to relax them, make them understand what I want, and find the best solutions.
“Football is like life — when you deserve something and give everything for it, sometimes football gives it back. Maybe not immediately, but it will. For now, we need to have it tomorrow.”
Chelle ended by calling on Nigerians to unite behind the team in their hour of need.
“The fans and media need to push these guys positively. You’ll see — they’ll play the best game of their lives. This game starts with you, and my players will follow.”
Focus, Faith, and the Final Push
As Nigeria head into their final group match, there’s a quiet tension mixed with belief in the camp.
For Chelle and Troost-Ekong, this is more than just a football match — it’s a test of faith, focus, and national pride.
A win against Benin might not guarantee qualification, but it would at least keep the dream alive. And as Troost-Ekong put it, the players are ready to “give everything possible.”
“All of us want to be there,” he said. “This is our life, our history that we’re trying to create. At the final whistle, we just want to look at ourselves and say we gave everything.”
