Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface has opened up about the emotional and physical struggles that almost pushed him to quit football early in his career.
In an interview with Eagles Tracker during a media session ahead of Nigeria’s AFCON qualifier against Libya, the Bayer Leverkusen star revealed how a major injury and the devastating loss of his mother made him question his future in football.
These two devastating events made him question whether he could continue pursuing his dreams as a professional player, Footballrover reports.
“There was a point in my life when I almost wanted to stop playing football. I wanted to quit because, at the start of my career, I suffered an injury that kept me out for about a year. I didn’t play for a whole year, and I lost my mom during that time. It was really tough,” Boniface shared.
Now 23 and an integral player at Bayer Leverkusen, Boniface reflected on the challenging road to recovery, emphasising how proud he is of his progress.
“To come back strong and keep doing what I’m doing now, I’m really proud of myself,” he added.
Boniface also revealed how his journey shaped his outlook on criticism, choosing to focus on his happiness rather than outside opinions.
“That’s why, most times, when people say things about me, I don’t really care. None of them know what I’ve been through. I just want to live my life, be happy, and enjoy myself.”
In a deeply personal moment, Boniface explained the significance of the number 22 on his jersey, revealing that it’s a tribute to his late mother.
“My tattoo is my mom’s name and the date I lost her—22 August 2019. That’s why I wear the number 22 on my jersey, to honor her.”
Every time Boniface steps onto the pitch, he carries his mother’s memory with him, drawing strength from her legacy and using it as motivation to succeed in his football career.
