Nigerian defender William Troost-Ekong has heaped praise on Super Eagles icon Ahmed Musa, reaffirming his status as the team’s captain despite his absence in recent Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Speaking in Ikot Ekpene, Ekong emphasised that Musa remains a respected leader in the squad, admired for his contributions both on and off the pitch, Footballrover reports.
Though Musa has not featured for Nigeria since the 2023 AFCON tournament in Côte d’Ivoire, Troost-Ekong made it clear that the veteran winger still holds a special place within the national team.
He stressed that Musa’s influence goes beyond his record-breaking number of international caps, highlighting the player’s leadership and role-model status among the younger members of the squad.
“He’s still our captain and he’s welcome back any time. He’s our most capped player, a good role model, and he’s a good leader. I am happy to deputize for him,” Troost Ekong stated
Troost-Ekong also explained the value of having a seasoned player like Musa guide the team, even in absentia, and expressed hope that Musa’s presence would soon grace the team once more.
Ahmed Musa: A leader ready to reignite Kano Pillars’ fortunes
Despite his international hiatus, Musa has been making waves in domestic football.
The 31-year-old forward recently returned to his former club, Kano Pillars, for a third stint, and immediately, he made a huge impact.
In his first game back, Musa delivered two goals to lead the club to a 2-0 victory over Sunshine Stars, snapping a four-game winless streak.
