Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman once again showed his knack for big moments, finding the net for Atlético Madrid in their Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad.
This time, however, his effort was not enough, as Atlético fell short after the final whistle and missed out on the Copa del Rey title, Footballrover reports.
Ademola Lookman Strikes Again in Copa del Rey Final Drama
Just days after scoring to help his side overcome FC Barcelona in their UEFA Champions League semi-final clash, Lookman was on target again, continuing his impressive run of form.
The Super Eagles star brought his team back into the contest after they had gone a goal down, but Atlético ultimately suffered a 4–3 defeat on penalties following a 2–2 draw after 90 minutes at Estadio de La Cartuja.
Lookman has now registered 11 goal involvements for Atlético this season — seven goals and four assists across all competitions.
The 28-year-old winger contributed three goals and two assists in the competition. He lasted 62 minutes before being substituted for Nicolás González.
Real Sociedad secured their first Copa del Rey title since the 2019/20 season, defeating Atlético on penalties.
The match ignited instantly when Ander Barrenetxea headed Sociedad into the lead after just 14 seconds.
Atlético responded through Ademola Lookman, who navigated a crowded box to fire home a low equaliser.
However, Sociedad reclaimed the lead just before halftime when Mikel Oyarzabal converted a penalty following Juan Musso’s foul on Gonçalo Guedes.
Atlético Madrid Fall Short Despite Late Fightback
The second half saw Atlético dominate possession, eventually finding a dramatic late equaliser through a precise left-footed strike from Julián Alvarez.
Despite a glaring miss from Álex Baena and Alvarez hitting the woodwork in extra time, neither side could break the deadlock before the whistle.
In the shootout, Sociedad goalkeeper Unai Marrero emerged as the hero, saving consecutive penalties from Alexander Sørloth and Alvarez.
Pablo Marín subsequently tucked away the winning spot-kick to seal the trophy.
The result extends Sociedad’s cup dominance over Atlético and marks a worrying slump for Diego Simeone’s side, who have now lost six of their last seven matches ahead of their Champions League semi-final against Arsenal.
