Super Falcons forward Uchenna Kanu has expressed her deep gratitude toward her Cruz Azul teammates following her dramatic stoppage-time heroics in the Liga MX Femenil Clausura playoff quarter-final.
Kanu, 28, salvaged a vital 1-1 draw against Monterrey on Thursday night, converting a 90th-minute penalty at Instalaciones La Noria Cancha 1, Footballrover reports.
Uchenna Kanu: A Moment of Trust
However, the Nigerian international revealed after the match that the goal was made possible by a significant gesture of trust from within the squad.
While many teams have rigid hierarchies for spot-kicks, Kanu highlighted the selfless actions of her strike partner that allowed her to take the crucial penalty under immense pressure.
“I feel blessed. I’m feeling thankful right now because my teammate gave me the ball to play the PK. You know, some teammates will take it and play it, but she handed it to me. I’m super thankful for that,” Kanu told the media post-match.
Kanu and Handling the Heat
Despite her scorching run of form—having now netted seven goals in her last six matches—Kanu admitted that the weight of the moment was heavy as she stepped up to the spot.
“I feel great. It wasn’t an easy one. I had so much pressure, but I’m super proud that I was able to put it at the back of the net,” she added. “We didn’t give up tonight. It was a really, really tough game, but we came out with a point.”
Kanu’s 12th goal of the season ensures that the tie remains deadlocked heading into the decisive second leg on May 3.
For the Nigerian star, who was also named MVP of the match, the focus now shifts from individual accolades to collective celebration.
“I’m just happy and excited, so I can’t wait to celebrate with my teammates right now,” she concluded.
