Super Falcons and Bay FC striker Asisat Oshoala stole the show at PayPal Park last night, scoring a crucial goal against her former club, Barcelona Femeni.
The 29-year-old forward, fresh off her appearance with the Nigerian national team at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where Randy Waldrum’s squad struggled and bowed out in the group stage with three losses and only one goal to their name, returned to her club in San Jose, California, for an exciting off-season friendly, Footballrover reports.
Facing off against FC Barcelona Femeni, this marked Bay FC’s second-ever match against an international opponent.
Oshoala wasted no time making her presence felt.
In the 17th minute, the 2023 CAF Female Player of the Year pounced on a loose pass from Barcelona’s goalkeeper, Gemma Font, just outside the box and coolly slotted the ball into the bottom left corner.
It was a moment of sheer brilliance that set the tone for the night.
But Barcelona wasn’t going down without a fight. Just four minutes later, Ewa Pajor made a dazzling run down the right flank, threading a pass to Kika Nazareth, who unleashed a precise strike from the edge of the box, sneaking the ball past the keeper into the left post.
The first half ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw, but the second half saw Barca’s relentless attack overwhelm Bay FC. Despite the loss, Oshoala’s standout performance was a highlight of the match.
After the game, Oshoala took to her X (formerly Twitter) page to express her gratitude to her former club and teammates, posting a heartfelt message translated as “Forever My Family.”
Next up for Bay FC, they’ll be heading to Portland, Oregon, to resume their NWSL season on Friday, where they’ll face off against the Portland Thorns at Providence Park.
