Nigerian forward Philip Otele continued his impressive form in the Swiss Super League, adding another goal contribution to his tally.
However, his efforts weren’t enough to prevent FC Basel from succumbing to a disappointing 6-2 away defeat against Young Boys on Sunday afternoon, Footballrover reports.
Philip Otele reaches 12th goal contribution amidst thrashing
In the Championship group stage clash at the Wankdorf Stadium, Otele provided an assist as Young Boys delivered a heavy defeat to FC Basel.
The 26-year-old left winger now boasts four assists for the campaign, adding to his eight goals, which brings his total to an impressive 12 goal contributions in just 17 appearances this season.
Football fans will recall that Philip Otele also played a key role in FC Basel’s dominant 5-0 victory over Servette with another assist.
The match started on a positive note for the visitors when Albian Ajeti opened the scoring in the 7th minute, capitalising on Marin Soticek’s pass.
However, Young Boys responded swiftly. Cedric Itten levelled the score just three minutes later, assisted by Zachary Athekame.
By the 29th minute, Darian Males had put the hosts in the lead, and shortly after the break, Itten scored his second, set up by Ebrima Colley, making it 3-1.
Despite Philip Otele’s goal contribution, Basel falls
Kevin Carlos briefly reignited Basel’s hopes in the 72nd minute with a well-taken goal, assisted by Otele, marking his 12th goal contribution.
But the late stages of the game saw Young Boys unleash a flurry of goals. Christian Fassnacht restored the two-goal cushion in the 86th minute, followed by Chris Bedia adding a fifth just three minutes later.
Fassnacht then sealed a dominant victory for Young Boys with his second goal in stoppage time and unfortunately for Basel,no victory in Bärn.
This defeat brings an end to FC Basel’s nine-game unbeaten streak. Despite the setback, they have already secured the league title, meaning this loss won’t affect their championship status.
With only one league game remaining against Luzern next weekend, Otele and his teammates will be aiming to bounce back before their Swiss Cup final against Biel/Bienne.
Philip Otele, nearing the end of his loan from UAE Pro League side Al Wahda, can look back on his time with pride.
He returns as a league champion and with the potential for a domestic cup double to his name, highlighted by his significant contributions.
