The Swiss Super League clash between FC Servette and Basel saw two Nigerian stars, Victory Beniangba and Philip Otele, face off against each other on Sunday evening, with the outcome surprising many.
While Otele found the back of the net for Basel, it was Beniangba who came out on top, leaving Otele’s side trailing behind, Footballrover reports.
Despite Otele’s best efforts, it was Beniangba’s FC Servette who secured a crucial victory, ending their long winless streak and edging closer to the top of the table.
Victory Beniangba’s crucial impact for Servette
It was a much-needed win for Beniangba and FC Servette, who had endured a difficult period, including a series of four consecutive draws.
With their last win dating back to December 2024, a 3-0 triumph over Lugano, Servette’s morale had taken a hit.
The team came into this match hoping to break free from a seven-game winless run and climb the Swiss Super League standings.
Despite Beniangba’s fitness struggles after an 11-month injury layoff, he started the match but was substituted at halftime as Dereck Kutesa took his place.
Philip Otele’s brilliant yet brief performance for Basel
On the other side, Philip Otele and Basel were enjoying a solid run, having won five of their last six matches.
In the 36th minute, Basel thought they had taken the lead; unfortunately, Anton Kade’s goal was ruled out due to a handball in the buildup.
Despite the disallowed goal, Basel continued to push forward, but after a goalless opening 45 minutes, Servette broke the deadlock in the 50th minute through Alexis Antunes.
Before Dereck Kutesa doubled the lead 11 minutes later, giving Servette a comfortable advantage.
Otele finally got his name on the scoresheet in the 73rd minute, narrowing the gap to 2-1 and briefly reigniting hopes of a comeback.
However, just six minutes later, he was substituted for Gabriel Sigua, and Basel’s attempts to equalise were thwarted.
In the end, Victory Beniangba and FC Servette held firm, securing a 2-1 victory and moving into 4th place with 36 points.
They are now just four points behind Philip Otele’s Basel, who remain at the top of the table.
Servette will now face Grasshoppers in their next fixture, while Basel will look to bounce back against Lausanne, aiming to maintain their grip at the summit.
