NWFL Super Six: How Rivers Angels lost ₦10 million

Rivers Angels stormed into the 2025 NWFL Super Six playoffs brimming with confidence.

After thrashing Miha Babes 5-0 in the FA Cup knockout round and edging Remo Stars Ladies on penalties, they looked primed for a double chase, Footballrover reports.

Their semi-final date with Ibom Angels in the FA Cup was secured, and the Super Six title looked within reach.

But the real shock began once the whistle blew for their first Super Six fixture.

Cracks in confidence: Rivers Angels’ collapse begins

Despite their strong form, Rivers Angels fell flat against Bayelsa Queens, losing narrowly 1-0. It was a bitter pill for fans who had expected a bold start from one of Nigeria’s most decorated women’s football teams.

Matchday two saw no significant bounce back. A 1-1 draw against Edo Queens only deepened doubts. The title race was still wide open, but Rivers Angels needed to step up.

Instead, they slipped further.

Matchday three handed them what should have been a perfect chance to reset—against a familiar foe, Nasarawa Amazons.

But once again, the Port Harcourt side faltered, losing 2-1 and dashing any realistic hopes of lifting the NWFL Super Six crown.

Too little, too late: When PH ladies finally woke up

With nothing left but pride to fight for, the Jewels of Rivers finally found some fire. They defeated Naija Ratels 2-0 in matchday four, a result that, while impressive, arrived too late to matter.

Then came the final act.

Remo Stars Ladies, debutants dreaming of a historic title, stood between Rivers Angels and a respectable finish. The Sky Blue Ladies needed a win. Rivers Angels, though out of the title race, had their reputation to defend.

Just nine minutes into the match, Titilayo Aweda opened the scoring for Rivers Angels.

Three minutes after the break, she doubled the lead. Aishat Animashaun’s 70th-minute goal for Remo Stars made it 2-1, but it wasn’t enough.

After six minutes of added time, Rivers Angels claimed the win—but it meant little. They finished fourth. Remo Stars, fifth. And Bayelsa Queens? Champions, walking away with the ₦10 million prize money.

For Rivers Angels, it was a painful lesson: titles are not won on pedigree, and confidence without consistency leads to heartbreak.

The NWFL Super Six organisers confirmed a total prize pool of ₦24.5 million, with the top three teams earning ₦10 million, ₦6 million, and ₦4 million, respectively—an upgrade from last season.

Even the bottom three now earn ₦1.5 million each, up from ₦500,000, reflecting the league’s push toward professionalism.

NWFL Chairperson Nkechi Obi hailed the improved structure as a major step in improving women’s football in Nigeria.

The league winners will also represent Nigeria in the WAFU regional qualifiers for the CAF Women’s Champions League and could feature at the inaugural FIFA Women’s Club World Cup if they reach the African final.
