Former Super Eagles star Odion Ighalo had already made a name for himself, but on Thursday evening, he reminded everyone just how clutch he can be.
There was tension in the air, the kind that wraps around a stadium when the stakes are sky-high, Footballrover reports.
In a high-pressure encounter that could define their season, the Nigerian forward delivered once again—but not in the way you might expect.
Odion Ighalo steps up as Al Wehda fight to stay alive
With Al Wehda in relegation battle mode, every match feels like a final—and this one was no different.
Away at Damac, the visitors were desperate for points, and Ighalo was once again the man at the heart of their survival push.
The breakthrough didn’t come easy. Despite Damac going down to ten men in the 35th minute after Abdelkader Bedrane received a second yellow card, Al Wehda struggled to break the deadlock before the half-time whistle.
But just seven minutes into the second half, Ighalo made his mark. In a moment of pure vision and class, the ex-Premier League star striker set up Juninho Bacuna with a clever pass that turned out to be the match-winner.
It was Ighalo’s second assist of the season, bringing his overall goal contributions to eight—five goals and two assists in the Saudi Pro League and one goal in the King’s Cup.
Al Wehda still in the danger zone despite win
While the 1-0 win was crucial, it didn’t lift Al Wehda in the relegation battle out of the danger zone.
The club remains 17th in the 18-team Saudi Pro League table with 23 points with seven games to go.
However, it was their third win in five matches—a sign of hope for a team that’s slowly starting to find its fight.
As for Odion Ighalo, the veteran forward continues to lead from the front, showing grit, leadership, and moments of brilliance that could yet turn the tide for Al Wehda.
Their next battle? A clash with Al-Taawoun on Saturday, April 19—another chance for Odion Ighalo to strike again.
