You wouldn’t believe it, but two NPFL stars, Shola Adelani and Ayomide Cole, were on fire for Ikorodu City on Thursday evening as they turned Onikan into a theatre of goals—but that’s not even the best part.
Ikorodu City fans who packed into the Onikan Stadium came for a football match, but what they witnessed was far beyond expectations, Footballrover reports.
From the first whistle, there was something in the air—a sense that this game would be different.
What unfolded was more than joy by two unstoppable stars, Shola Adelani and Ayomide Cole, who delivered a performance that will live long in NPFL memory.
But one moment in particular changed everything and made history for the Lagos-based club.
Shola Adelani hits historic mark, becomes club’s record-breaker
It didn’t take long for Ikorodu City to stamp their authority on the game. Emmanuel Solomon broke the deadlock with a composed finish from Waliu’s precise cross to get the ball rolling.
Not long after, Shola Adelani registered his name in the club’s record books with a well-placed header—his 10th league goal of the season, making him the first player in Ikorodu City’s history to hit double digits.
With 12 goal contributions this season (10 goals and 2 assists), Shola has evolved into the heartbeat of Ikorodu’s attacking play.
His positioning, timing, and hunger for goals lifted the crowd—and his team—to another level.
This came after Emmanuel Solomon opened the floodgates with a confidence-lifting goal for the hosts.
It was a brilliantly worked move—Waliu burst down the right flank and whipped in a low cross that Solomon coolly finished at the heart of the box.
Ayomide Cole steals the spotlight with dazzling second-half display
While Shola laid the foundation, Ayomide Cole brought the house down in the second half.
The young forward was an electrifying mood—turning defenders inside out, delivering assists, and finishing with style.
He created the third goal with a clever move and a pinpoint assist for Oyedokun Tosin.
Then came his first strike—burying Waliu’s delivery into the bottom corner in the 77th minute.
But it was his second goal that sealed his star performance: an 87th-minute thunderbolt, powered in with solo brilliance for his brace.
Oladimeji Dada also got in on the act, tapping in a back-post cross to make it 5-0, and that was his first goal in the colours of Ikorodu City as he met a delightful cross from Waliu yet again.
Katsina United had no answers, and by the final whistle, they looked like a team begging for mercy.
A historic night and rising NPFL titans
Ikorodu City has become the first team to score six goals in an NPFL match since Rivers United’s 6-0 thrashing of Gombe United back in June 2024.
It was a perfect night for the Oga Boys—not just for the emphatic 6-0 scoreline but for the emergence of true stars in Shola Adelani and Ayomide Cole.
They didn’t just score goals—they put on a clinic, announcing themselves as two of the most exciting talents in the NPFL.
With this commanding win, Ikorodu now sits 4th on the table with 49 points and will take their momentum into Sunday’s clash against Niger Tornadoes.
