The Flamingos of Nigeria continued their dominant campaign at the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup with yet another emphatic 4-0 victory over Ecuador.
Following their impressive 4-1 win against New Zealand in their opening match, the young Nigerian side maintained their winning streak, leaving no doubt about their ambitions in the tournament.
Shakirat Moshood netted twice, while Harmony Chidi and Peace Effiong added to the tally, helping Nigeria secure a comfortable victory in Santiago.
But how did the match unfold, and what does it say about the Flamingos’ growing strength?
Flamingos take charge early against Ecuador
It took the Nigerian team just 26 minutes to seize control of the game.
Team captain Taiwo Afolabi was brought down inside the penalty area, and after a lengthy VAR review, the Flamingos were awarded a penalty.
Shakirat Moshood calmly converted, sending the Ecuadorian goalkeeper the wrong way to open the scoring.
Just five minutes later, Peace Effiong came close to doubling the lead, forcing the goalkeeper into a fine save.
Then, Harmony Chidi appeared to score from a goalmouth scramble, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
Despite these early chances, the Flamingos took a narrow 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Dominance continues after the break
After halftime, the Flamingos resumed with the same intensity. Chidi once again had a goal disallowed for offside, but she finally found the back of the net in the 54th minute, thanks to a well-timed assist from Peace Effiong.
Effiong then capitalised on a defensive error to score Nigeria’s third goal in the 66th minute, before Moshood completed the rout with her second goal in stoppage time, securing the Flamingos’ second victory of the tournament.
With eight goals in two matches and just one conceded, the Flamingos are proving to be a formidable force at the U-17 World Cup.
