In a recent Nigeria Women’s Football League clash, Rivers Angels faced a tough loss against Edo Queens, conceding a 4-1 defeat at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.

Edo Queens displayed their dominance in front of goal, with Goodness Osigwe securing a remarkable hat-trick and Amarachukwu Onuorah sealing the deal for the home team, Footballrover reports.

Despite the challenging match, Peace Effiong emerged as a beacon of hope for Coach Whyte Ogbonda’s side, scoring the team’s only goal.

In a heartfelt tribute, she dedicated her achievement to her late mother, while expressing both joy for her performance and sorrow for her mother’s absence.

“I feel happy and excited to score today for my team in my first away match. I want to dedicate this goal to my late mom; I wish she was here, but I still thank God,” Effiong shared. 

Though the outcome wasn’t ideal for the Jewels of Rivers, Effiong, however, remains optimistic about the team’s prospects, confident that they will secure a spot in the Super Six.

Effiong’s aspirations extend beyond individual goals; she aims to contribute more to Rivers Angels’ success, revealing her commitment to scoring more goals with the support of her teammates.

“I wish to score more goals if I get the chance to score, and with the help of my teammates, I know they will help me,” she noted.

Effiong’s journey to the limelight began when Rivers Angels‘ head coach discovered her talent during a mid-season break, leading her to debut for the team at just 14 years old.

Her promising performance against FC Robo marked the beginning of a remarkable career trajectory, capturing attention by scoring the only goal for her team.

Tragically, on February 16, 2023, Peace Effiong lost her mother, leaving her to navigate life’s challenges alongside her father and siblings.
