Enyimba FC top star, Ikenna Cooper, is on the verge of a sensational move to Rivers United, where he will reunite with former manager Finidi George.
The 22-year-old midfield lynchpin has reportedly reached a personal agreement with the Pride of Rivers, marking a significant coup for the Garden City club, Footballrover reports.
Cooper’s contract with the People’s Elephant expired at the end of the just-concluded Nigeria Premier Football League season.
Despite being a key figure in Enyimba’s title-winning campaign in 2022, the midfielder has opted to join Finidi at Rivers United, turning down the opportunity to compete in the CAF Confederation Cup.
The defensive midfielder has impressed since breaking into the NPFL with Ifeanyi Ubah in 2019, showing off his talent at Heartland and Sunshine Stars before joining Enyimba.
A lot of fans even expect his consistent performances should be able to earn him a place in the national team setup.
However, Enyimba currently faces the challenging task of retaining their top players.
With Cooper’s departure, NPFL top scorer Chijioke Mbaoma is also looking set to leave for a club in Azerbaijan or Macedonia.
The club has also lost a key player after a move for Chibuike Nwaiwu to Austrian side Wolfsberger AC was confirmed early this week.

Rivers United, aiming to bounce back from an eighth-place finish last season, will be hoping that Cooper’s arrival can bolster their midfield and propel them to a top-four finish.
The addition of Ikenna Cooper will certainly help to reshape their midfield following the departures of Augustine Okejepha to Simba SC and Alex Ayowah to Remo Stars.
