In a smooth and strategic move to reclaim their glory and grab the NPFL title back from Enugu Rangers, Rivers United has appointed Finidi George as their new head coach.
Footballrover can officially confirm that the ex-Super Eagles’ coach put pen to paper on a 2-year deal with the Pride of Rivers.
The former Ajax winger signed his paper contract at Real Madrid Football Academy in Port Harcourt on Wednesday afternoon, marking a new chapter for the former Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions, Footballrover reports.
This appointment comes on the heels of Finidi’s recent resignation as head coach of the Super Eagles.
He takes over from Stanley Eguma, who parted ways with the PH team following a disappointing eighth-place finish in the 2023–24 NPFL season.
Eguma’s departure ended a long tenure marred by a poor 2023–24 campaign.
Expressing his gratitude, Finidi George conveyed his honour and appreciation to the club’s management, including the Sports Commissioner and the General Manager, as well as the supporters.
“I’m not here for fun; I’m here for a purpose. I know there is hunger for success, but we must have patience,” he stated.
Finidi emphasised his commitment to revitalising the team and striving for success.

He acknowledged the high expectations and the club’s potential, setting a clear goal to clinch the league title in his first season.
“With the capacity of the management, our aim is to win the league,” he noted, highlighting his confidence in the team’s abilities and the importance of diligent work.
The new head coach, known for his tenure with Enyimba, where he led them to a title victory in the 2022–23 season, brings a wealth of experience and a winning mentality.
Finidi stressed that his personal target is to play good football and bring the title back to Port Harcourt.
“For a big team like Rivers United, the target is all about winning,” he reiterated.
As Rivers United embarks on this new chapter, Finidi George’s leadership is poised to steer the club towards achieving its ambitions.
While Finidi will be unveiled tomorrow, the big question is: can he bring the title back home?
