The reigning Nigeria Premier League champions, Enugu Rangers, have secured the signature of experienced striker Okafor Onyekachi.
The 30-year-old forward joins the Flying Antelopes on a two-year deal, bolstering their attacking options for the upcoming season, Footballrover reports.
The transfer, announced via Rangers’ social media channels, sees Onyekachi depart Heartland FC after a single season.
However, according to Footballrover’s exclusive reports, the deal holds a deeper story.
Hijacking the Deal
Footballrover understands that the Coal City side swooped in to snatch Onyekachi from the clutches of their arch-rivals, Enyimba International FC.
The People’s Elephant were reportedly in advanced talks with the striker and on the verge of completing the transfer.
Onyekachi’s decision to switch allegiances appears to be driven by his desire to play in the prestigious CAF Champions League.
Enugu Rangers, as the reigning champions, will participate in the continent’s top club competition, while Enyimba will feature in the CAF Confederation Cup.
A seasoned campaigner, Onyekachi began his professional journey with Crown FC before embarking on a journey across various clubs.
He has donned the jerseys of Warri Wolves, Dolphins FC, Turkish side Giresunspor, Rivers United, Yalova SK, Dogan Türk Birliği, and most recently, Heartland FC.
Despite Heartland’s relegation last season, Onyekachi displayed his goal-scoring prowess by finishing as the club’s joint top scorer with five goals.
His experience and ability to find the net are undeniable assets for Enugu Rangers.
Looking Ahead
The addition of Onyekachi adds firepower to the Enugu Rangers attack.
With the CAF Champions League looming and the NPFL title to defend, the Flying Antelopes are already looking well-positioned for a successful season.
