Just weeks after Nigerian music sensation Burna Boy launched his football academy, the team faced a devastating setback in the hands of NPFL giants Enyimba.
The Burna Boy Football Academy was handed a crushing 8-0 defeat by Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) side Enyimba in a friendly match on Wednesday, Footballrover reports.
Former NPFL champions Enyimba displayed their ruthlessness with an all-out attacking performance.
The team’s new signings Ani Chigozie and Ifeanyi Ihemekwele each bagged a brace, while Chidiebere Nnachi, Christian Nnaji, Chukwudi Nwaodu, and Kalu Nweke all found the back of the net, leaving Burna Boy Academy in shambles.
Coach Yemi Olarenwaju’s squad used the match as part of their final preparations for the upcoming NPFL season, which kicks off this Sunday.
The Aba-based club will now travel to Owerri for their season opener against Heartland at the Dan Anyiam Stadium.

Despite their overwhelming win against the academy team, Enyimba were completely toothless earlier in the week.
They faced a much tougher challenge against Rivers United on Monday, where they were outclassed in a 1-0 defeat at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.
The People’s Elephant became “baby elephants” against the Pride of Rivers, only to bounce back and flex their strength against the young Burna Boy Academy squad.
Meanwhile, the academy, founded by music superstar Burna Boy, was left reeling after what can only be described as a footballing masterclass by the experienced Enyimba side.
The BurnaBoy Academy took to social media shortly after the match to express their disappointment.
In a tweet that went viral, the academy described the match as if Enyimba “brought a nuclear bomb to a street fight.”
Despite the loss, the academy pointed to the importance of exposure, experience, and resilience, emphasising that these tough lessons will only strengthen the team in the long run.
“It’s part of the drill. Experience and exposure are key. This is what you benefit if you join the BurnaBoy Football Academy. Will the Lagos Zone come to our rescue?” the Academy wrote on Twitter.
Though it’s just the beginning for Burna Boy’s academy, they’ll need to regroup quickly if they hope to turn this harsh lesson into future success.
