In a thrilling end to their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, Zimbabwe’s late equaliser shattered Nigeria’s hopes of securing a crucial victory.
As the Super Eagles looked poised for three points in Uyo, an unexpected twist left many Nigerians stunned—and an English club celebrating, Footballrover reports.
Huddersfield Town applauds Chirewa’s heroics
The English club took to social media to praise their player, Tawanda Chirewa, after his last-gasp strike rescued a 1-1 draw for Zimbabwe.
The midfielder, currently on loan from Wolves, stepped onto the pitch in the 80th minute and delivered the crucial goal just 10 minutes later, capitalising on a defensive lapse by the Super Eagles.
Nigeria had earlier taken the lead in the 74th minute when Victor Osimhen headed home what seemed to be the winner.
However, the Super Eagles’ defensive struggles resurfaced, allowing Zimbabwe to snatch a point.
Huddersfield Town acknowledged Chirewa’s impact, stating,
“Tawanda Chirewa’s goal has secured a point for Zimbabwe in their FIFA World Cup qualifier with Nigeria. Well played, Tawanda.”
Super Eagles stumble, Zimbabwe still rock bottom
Despite their dramatic equaliser, Zimbabwe remains at the bottom of Group C with just four points, having drawn four and lost two of their qualifiers.
The Super Eagles, meanwhile, sit in fourth place with seven points, falling short of expectations in their campaign.
Interestingly, Chirewa had earlier expressed confidence before the match, insisting the Warriors had nothing to fear against Nigeria.
And he went on to prove his words right, becoming the hero of the night in Uyo.
