Zimbabwe’s Tawanda Chirewa is not backing down ahead of a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
Despite their struggles in the qualifiers, the young winger believes the Warriors have nothing to fear as they prepare to battle Nigeria in Uyo on Tuesday, Footballrover reports.
Michael Nees’ side remains winless after five matches, sitting at the bottom of Group C with just three points.
However, Chirewa, who had an impressive outing in their 2-2 draw against Benin, is convinced Zimbabwe can stand their ground against the three-time African champions.
‘We can’t fear Super Eagles’ – Tawanda Chirewa confident of Zimbabwe’s quality
Currently on loan at Huddersfield Town from Wolves, Chirewa is eager to test himself against Nigeria’s top stars. Aware of the challenge ahead, the 21-year-old remains undaunted.
He claimed that he’s more focused on recovery and preparing to go again on Tuesday against the Super Eagles, which he described as a very good team.
“A lot of players [in Nigeria] play in England and Europe. Obviously, I want to go out there and show what I can do. Our team has so many good players as well, so we can’t fear Nigeria,” Chirewa said, as quoted by The Standard.
The Warriors face a daunting task against a Nigerian side brimming with confidence after a convincing 2-0 victory over Rwanda.
Playing in front of their home fans at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, the Super Eagles will be aiming to tighten their grip on a World Cup spot.
For Zimbabwe, it’s an uphill battle—but Chirewa is determined to lead the charge.
Meanwhile, Eric Chelle insists his team remains grounded after the Rwanda victory and is fully concentrating on the upcoming clash against Zimbabwe.
Meanwhile, the NFF has restricted access to the Super Eagles’ camp, barring journalists and visitors. Today’s training session was held behind closed doors, with no media allowed.
