After 120 minutes of tense, scoreless football, Nigeria fell short from the spot, bringing their AFCON 2025 campaign to a close at the semi-final stage, Footballrover reports.

Super Eagles Hold Firm as Semi-Final Lives Up to the Hype

Both teams approached the game with caution, aware of the high stakes, and neither side was able to find a breakthrough during regulation time.

The Super Eagles made a lively start, testing Morocco early, especially from set pieces.

Nigeria looked organised and confident in the opening exchanges, while the hosts remained compact and dangerous on the counter.

After 25 minutes, the match remained goalless. Ademola Lookman came closest to opening the scoring, forcing a sharp save from Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou with a powerful effort from distance.

Despite moments of pressure from both sides, the first half ended with nothing to separate them.

Nigeria needed more attacking urgency after the break, but Morocco continued to defend well and control key areas of the pitch.

An hour into the game, the scoreline remained unchanged as both teams struggled to create clear chances.

The Super Eagles stayed disciplined defensively, matching Morocco’s intensity and composure, but goals remained elusive.

The match finished 0–0 after 90 minutes, forcing extra time. Despite the added 30 minutes, neither side could break the deadlock, and penalties were required to decide the contest.

Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali gave Nigeria hope by saving one spot kick. But then, misses from Bruno Onyemaechi and Samuel Chukwueze proved costly, allowing Morocco to secure a 4–2 win on penalties and book their place in the final.

For the Super Eagles, it was a heartbreaking end to a hard-fought campaign, one that showed resilience and defensive strength but ultimately lacked the cutting edge needed at the decisive moment.

The Eagles have now missed the opportunity to reach a second consecutive AFCON final after losing to Atlas Lions of Morocco on penalties.

However, Eric Chelle and his boys will get another chance to finish the tournament with a medal this weekend when they take on Egypt in the third-place playoff.
