Nigerian striker Yusuf Otubanjo added another historic moment to his career in the Armenian Premier League, inspiring FC Pyunik to a stunning 3-1 comeback victory over Gandzasar on Saturday.

Although he only featured for 45 minutes, Otubanjo was the game-changer, coming off the bench in the second half to level the scores and ignite Pyunik’s attacking fire, Footballrover reports.

His crucial equaliser paved the way for a complete turnaround as the visitors dominated the final half at the Junior Sport Stadium.

The match began on a shaky note for Pyunik after an own goal by defender Sergiy Vakulenko handed Gandzasar the lead in the 27th minute.

Enter Yusuf Otubanjo, who replaced Temur Dzhikiya after the break and wasted no time making his presence felt.

Just 20 minutes into his appearance, he struck the all-important equaliser that not only changed the momentum of the game but also made history in Armenia.

With that goal—his 87th in Armenian football—Otubanjo officially became the highest-scoring foreign player in the history of the Armenian Premier League.

It was a milestone achievement for the 32-year-old forward, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

Pyunik run riot after historic strike

Pyunik didn’t stop there. Just two minutes after Otubanjo’s record-breaking goal, Joel Bopesu gave the visitors the lead.

Matas Vareika then sealed the victory in added time, capping off a dominant second-half display and a huge win away from home.

Speaking after the match, a delighted Yusuf Otubanjo said,

“It’s amazing to see that I’m the best foreign scorer for now. It’s a great opportunity for me. It’s not easy, you know. But I’m happy to be the best foreign scorer.”

The result lifts Pyunik to 4th place on the league table with 47 points, setting up a tense clash against rivals Ararat-Armenia in the Armenian Cup semi-final first leg on Thursday.

That fixture carries extra weight, with Pyunik seeking revenge after a crushing 4-0 loss to the same side in the Armenian Supercup Final.

As the season intensifies, all eyes will remain on Yusuf Otubanjo, who continues to make history in Armenia—one golden goal at a time.
