Former Nigerian youth international Yusuf Otubanjo continued his fine goal-scoring form for FC Pyunik on Saturday, but his efforts couldn’t prevent his team from suffering a disappointing defeat.
However, despite Otubanjo finding the net from the penalty spot, Pyunik fell 2-1 at home to Ararat Armenia in a gripping Armenia ID Bank Premier League clash.
Otubanjo scored Pyunik’s only goal of the match, yet it wasn’t enough as his compatriot, Tenton Yenne, stole the spotlight with a match-winning display, ensuring Ararat Armenia walked away with all three points.
Tenton Yenne’s decisive moment breaks Pyunik hearts
The match at the Junior Sport Stadium saw Ararat Armenia take an early lead in the 15th minute when Yenne assisted Ghanaian winger Eric Ocansey, who slotted home the opener.
Pyunik pressed for an equaliser but trailed at halftime.
Twelve minutes after the restart, 32-year-old Otubanjo stepped up to convert a penalty, bringing Pyunik level and reigniting their hopes.
However, 24-year-old Yenne had the final say, firing in a crucial goal nine minutes later after a brilliant assist from Ocansey.
That strike proved to be the winner, silencing the home crowd and securing a vital away victory.
Yusuf Otubanjo and Yenne continue scoring streaks
Yusuf Otubanjo’s goal marked his second consecutive scoring appearance and his 12th strike in 15 league games this season.
Meanwhile, Yenne’s winner not only secured the victory for Ararat Armenia but also took his season tally to 10 goals in 18 matches.
Tenton Yenne also marked his 100th appearance for the club in the match against Pyunik yesterday.
“Congratulations to Tenton on this brilliant achievement from all the club representatives,” Ararat Armenia wrote on their social media page.
Pyunik’s night worsened in the dying moments when Bryan Alceus received a second yellow card, reducing them to 10 men.
Despite the setback, Pyunik remains third on the table with 40 points, holding a narrow two-point lead over fourth-placed Ararat Armenia.
Up next, Pyunik faces Lernayin Artsakh in the Armenia Cup quarter-finals, while Yenne’s Ararat Armenia will battle Urartu for a spot in the next round.
