Super Falcons star Toni Payne once again stole the spotlight, delivering a brilliant assist against Liverpool to power Everton to a memorable 2-0 victory in Sunday’s Women’s Super League Merseyside derby.
Coming off the bench in the 63rd minute to replace Kelly Gago, Toni Payne wasted no time making her mark, Footballrover reports.
Toni Payne’s assist against Liverpool lights up Anfield
Just six minutes after entering the pitch, the Nigerian international darted down the left wing, danced past defenders, and set up Karen Holmgaard with a perfectly weighted ball to seal the game.
It was her second consecutive game with an assist, as she continues to gradually grow into the team.
The 30-year-old now boasts seven goal contributions this season—one goal and six assists—the new creative force for the Toffees.
Everton struck early at Anfield, with Katja Snoeijs opening the scoring in the sixth minute after a slick combination with Gago.
Despite going down to 10 players late in the game, Everton held their ground impressively to secure only their second away win of the season.
Nigerian star Toni Payne keeps rising in Merseyside derby
While Payne’s assist against Liverpool added flair to the win, Everton’s defence played a starring role too.
Courtney Brosnan made several key saves to frustrate a Liverpool side eager to end their derby drought since May 2019.
Karen Holmgaard’s goal, courtesy of Payne’s brilliance, doubled Everton’s advantage.
Meanwhile, her sister Sara saw red late on for a reckless challenge, but it didn’t dampen the Toffees’ dominance.
With this result, Everton completed a league double over Liverpool and climbed to just two points behind their rivals.
For Payne, it was yet another reminder that class always finds a way to shine—especially on derby day.
