Speaking after the thrilling 5-4 penalty win following a 2-2 draw where Moses Simon and Samuel Chukwueze scored for Nigeria, Chelle expressed his delight.

“In reality, this is my first trophy as a coach,” he beamed. “When I was a player, I won trophies, but this is my first as a coach. I hope with this, I can bring more trophies for Nigeria.”

The purpose behind the Unity Cup victory

Chelle also shed light on the timing and significance of the Cup. Initially hesitant due to the players’ fatigue at the end of the season, he found value in the opportunity it presented.

But then I thought about it again and said, ‘Okay, at least I get to be with my players,’ and that made me happy,” Chelle explained.

He also noted that the tournament served as crucial preparation for their important September goals, allowing him to assess various players.

He commended their hard work and spirit despite limited training time. Chelle lauded his team’s character and mindset displayed during the Unity Cup.

Right now, I can say that my players have a great spirit and a strong mindset. That makes me happy. We’ll keep working and thinking about our game project,” he declared.

He emphasised the importance of playing cohesively and the continuous need for mental and physical improvement, urging his players to become “warriors on the pitch”.

The Super Eagles boss sees this Unity Cup win as a stepping stone towards greater achievements, fuelled by the team’s unity and fighting spirit.
