Against the backdrop of lifting the Unity Cup trophy, a surprising revelation has emerged from the Super Eagles camp, as the team’s head coach, Eric Chelle, has left fans both elated and pondering what lies ahead.
After masterminding Nigeria’s Unity Cup triumph in London, Chelle didn’t just celebrate; he dropped a bombshell by pinpointing a critical Super Eagles weakness that demands immediate attention if they are to soar higher, Footballrover reports.
Eric Chelle unveils the critical Super Eagles weakness
Having secured Nigeria’s third Unity Cup title with a hard-fought 5-4 penalty shootout victory over Jamaica following a 2-2 draw at the Gtech Community Stadium, Brentford, Chelle’s post-match comments took an unexpected turn.
While acknowledging the goals from Moses Simon and Samuel Chukwueze and the overall positive aspects of their play, the coach didn’t shy away from highlighting a significant Super Eagles weakness.
“During this tournament, we scored goals, we created chances, and we showed some very good things in our game. But of course, we still need to work. We have weaknesses. In today’s game, for instance, we made 22 mistakes — that’s a lot,” Eric Chelle stated, emphasising the need for improvement.
“We need to improve, to step up as a group and as a team, especially if we want to qualify for the World Cup.”
Addressing the identified Super Eagles weakness under Chelle
Despite the Super Eagles’ dominance against a physically imposing Jamaican side, the 47-year-old coach’s focus remained on the imperfections.
Reflecting on his tactical approach, which saw the team shift between a diamond formation, a 4-2-3-1, and a 4-4-2, Chelle praised the players’ focus but reiterated the urgency of rectifying the identified team’s weakness.
“If you rewatch today’s game, you’ll see we started with a diamond formation. Around the 25th or 30th minute in the first half, we switched to a 4-2-3-1, and later we played a 4-4-2. I think the players stayed focused throughout,” he explained.
Despite the acknowledged weakness, Eric Chelle concluded on a positive note regarding the tournament’s outcome: “At the end of the day, I believe we deserved to win this tournament.”
