Ademola Lookman has been a huge revelation for Nigeria in 2024 and has righfully taken his place as the Super Eagles’ top scorer with six goals—three more than any of his teammates.
The Atalanta winger’s remarkable form since last season has powered Nigeria through key fixtures in both the African Cup of Nations and AFCON qualifiers, establishing him as one of the most reliable forwards in the squad, Footballrover reports.
A Brace to Sink Cameroon
Lookman began the year in explosive fashion, scoring twice during Nigeria’s 2-0 thrashing of Cameroon at the African Cup of Nations on January 27.
His first goal came in the 36th minute, a clinical finish that put Nigeria firmly in control.
However, it was his stoppage-time strike in the 90th minute that sealed the commanding victory, ensuring Nigeria dominated their regional rivals with ease.
Match Winner Against Angola
Barely a week later, Lookman once again showed his knack for delivering in crucial moments.
On February 2, his decisive goal secured Nigeria a narrow 1-0 win over Angola in another African Cup of Nations clash.
His sharp instincts in front of goal proved invaluable as Nigeria advanced through the tournament with confidence.
Late Hero Against Ghana
Lookman’s scoring run continued in March when Nigeria faced Ghana in a friendly match.
In a closely contested game, Lookman netted an 84th-minute winner, handing the Super Eagles a 2-1 victory.
His ability to step up in high-pressure situations had now become a hallmark of his game, consistently giving Nigeria the edge in tight contests.
Brace Against Benin in AFCON Qualifiers
Just today, Lookman added another chapter to his stellar year, bagging a brace to help Nigeria secure a 3-0 win over Benin Republic in their 2025 AFCON qualifiers at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
He opened the scoring half way through the first half, sending Nigeria on their way before capping his performance with a second strike, all but ending Benin’s hopes.
Victor Osimhen added the final goal, wrapping up the Super Eagles’ dominant display.
This victory was significant for more than just Lookman’s contribution.
It marked the first time Nigeria scored three or more goals in a single match since their 3-2 win over Mozambique in October 2023.
Moreover, it was the first time Nigeria netted three unreplied goals since their 6-0 demolition of Sao Tome in September 2023.
Breaking Uyo’s Curse
Before the Benin match, Nigeria had struggled at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, having conceded first and failed to win in their last two outings at the venue.
Despite being unbeaten there since June 2017—a seven-match streak with five wins and two draws—the team had not found the same attacking fluidity recently.
Lookman’s brace was key in breaking that unwanted streak, leading the Super Eagles to a much-needed victory.

Lookman’s Peak Form
Ademola Lookman’s six goals in 2024 show why he’s obviously one of Nigeria’s key attacking players.
His ability to show up and score in crucial moments and consistently deliver for the Super Eagles makes him a key figure in the team.
On Wednesday, the former Leicester City star was included in the 30-player shortlist for the 2024 Ballon d’Or.
On Saturday, he scores a brace for Nigeria in their AFCON 2025 qualifier against Benin.
What a remarkable week for Ademola Lookman!
