Rivers Angels have fought off all the competition to win the 2023/24 President Federation Cup after beating Naija Ratels 1-0 in the final on June 29.
Whyte Ogbonda’s side were up against Naija Ratels in the final of the competition at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos, on Saturday,
Rivers Angels, one of the most successful clubs in the domestic scene in Nigeria, were favourites to win the trophy, and they sure did deliver.
The Port Harcourt club defeated Delta Queens 2-1 in the semi-final, while their Abuja-based counterpart edged out Remo Stars Ladies 7-6 on penalties to reach the final.
After a tensed battle between both sides, it took the eight-time FA Cup champions 45 minutes to find the breakthrough through a penalty kick.
Just a few seconds before the halftime break, the New Vision Queens were awarded a penalty after Naija Ratels defender Adebayo Jumai handled the ball in her box.
Blessing Okpe, who has been inspirational for the team all through the competition, converted a spot kick to give the Angels a deserved lead heading into the first half break.
The second half resumed with the same intensity, and despite all efforts, the scoreline remained the same.
Bankole Olowookere’s side, Naija Ratels, featured in the final of the competition for the first time, becoming the first club from Abuja in 24 years to reach the final of the competition.
While the Jewel of Rivers have now won the title for the ninth time three times more than any other side, the team last won the Cup title in 2018.
