The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Rivers State Chapter has congratulated Rivers Angels Football Club of Port Harcourt for emerging as champions of the President Federation Cup (women).

The victory came after a nail-biting clash with Naija Ratels, where Rivers Angels secured a 1-0 win at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, Footballrover reports.

The Jewels of Rivers displayed their dominance, with the encounter drawing significant attendance.

The match was tense, with both teams showing off so much determination.

However, it was the eight-time FA Cup champions who found the breakthrough just before halftime.

A crucial moment came when Naija Ratels’ defender, Adebayo Jumai, committed a handball in the box, leading to a penalty.

Blessing Okpe, a standout performer throughout the competition, confidently converted the spot kick, giving Rivers Angels a deserved lead as they headed into the break.

The second half was equally intense, with both teams pushing hard, but the score remained 1-0 in favour of Rivers Angels.

In a congratulatory message signed by Chairman Cyril Dum Wite and Secretary Comrade Tonye Orabere, SWAN Rivers State Chapter praised the team’s success, attributing it to Governor Siminialayi Fubara’s commitment to prioritising sports.

They commended the players for their team spirit, dedication, and the pride they bring to Rivers State.

“We are not surprised by this win because the calibre of players in the club can defeat any female team in Nigeria. Even though you narrowly missed securing a continental ticket this season, your performance was commendable. We urge you to maintain this spirit, commitment, and determination next season,” the statement read.

SWAN also extended appreciation to the state’s commissioner of sports, Barrister Christopher Green, for his support in achieving this milestone.
