Rivers Angels coach Tosan Blankson and his highflying ladies have arrived in Asaba, ready for their much-anticipated Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) South-South derby against Delta Queens.

However, coach Tosan Blankson isn’t buying into the hype. Instead of treating it as a fierce rivalry, he has dismissed the matchup as just another game, claiming his squad is far superior, Footballrover reports.

Blankson, who previously led the Queens of Asaba to a league title in the 2022/2023 season, insists this is not a high-stakes clash.

While acknowledging Delta Queens’ quality, he believes his current team has the upper hand.

“I’m not underestimating Delta Queens, but their players are no match for mine. It’s not a big clash because the players in the team now are different from the players that I coached. Majority of them have left,” Blankson stated.

Despite the heated buildup, the Rivers Angels coach remains focused on securing another win after their recent result over FC Robo.

He emphasised that his team is approaching each fixture with a winning mentality, with their eyes set on maximum points on Wednesday.

Former Delta Queens star ready to face her old club

Meanwhile, midfielder Taiwo Afolabi, the former captain of the Asaba side, has also expressed confidence ahead of the match.

While she has fond memories of her time with the Asaba Queens, she made it clear that sentiment won’t cloud her determination.

“I’m back home to play against my former team, but this is business. I am ready to face my former team and secure the maximum 3 points,” Afolabi declared.

In their last nine meetings, the Jewels of Rivers have won three times, Delta ladies have won once, and five matches have ended in draws.

With tensions rising, coach Blankson and her ladies will be hoping to make fans of the Garden City side proud as they look to maintain their lead at the top of the NWFL Group B table.
